Fruit, coffee and chocolate – a versatile autumn wine selection from South Africa



Six wines from three different regions of SA in a late summer garden tasting.


Name:  The Rustler Chenin Blanc 2011 
Country: South Africa
Appellation: Western Cape WO
ABV: 13%
Tasting notes: Beautifully pale golden in colour with a slight fizz lasting just for a short while.
Citric on the nose with hints of lime and some mineral notes. On the palate, sweetish attack opening up into citrus freshness with flavours of green apple and apricot. Lovely round finish with a pleasant bitterness.
Pairing: seafood, pasta with creamy sauces, goat cheese.

Name: Mont Destin Chenin Blanc 2010  
Country: South Africa
Appellation: Coastal Region WO
ABV: 14%
Tasting notes: Light golden in colour with silver reflexes. Very aromatic on the nose revealing citric and buttery notes and hints of pineapple. On the palate it’s elegant with flavours of baked apples, ripe pear and papaya. Round and balanced with a long and pleasant finish.
Pairing: sea fish or white meat based dishes with rich sauces, cream cheese.

Name : Le Geminus Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2010 
Country : South Africa
Appellation : Western Cape WO
ABV : 13%
Tasting notes:  Light golden and brilliant in colour. Complex on the nose it reveals notes of jasmine; lemon grass and some nuttiness. On the palate it is balanced, with a good body and flavours of ripe apricots and grass blade. It gradually opens up to reveal a lovely citric notes leading to a long and nutty finish.
Pairing: seafood, Asian dishes, strong-flavoured cheese.

Name: Groenendal Vineyards Merlot 2011  
Country: South Africa
Appellation: Wellington WO
ABV: 14%
Tasting notes: Ruby in colour. On the nose reveals notes of raisins, red fruit and cinnamon.
Medium-bodied on the palate with a ripe fruit attack and gentle tannins nicely balanced by acidity.
Pairing: Seasoned roasted white meats, semi-hard cheese.

Name: The Chocolatier Shiraz 2011   
Country: South Africa
Appellation: Western Cape WO
ABV: 14.5%
Tasting notes: Deep purple in colour with violet reflexes. Ripe plum and earthy on the nose with some notes of black pepper and chocolate. On the palate it’s round and rich with mature fruit, tamed tannins, a good grip and quite a long finish.
Pairing: spicy white meat, grilled lamb chops.

Name: The Grinder Pinotage 2011   
Country:  South Africa
Appellation: Western Cape WO
ABV: 14%
Tasting notes: Deep purple in colour. Lovely notes of ripe plums and blackcurrant with some hints of butter. On the palate it’s fruity with flavours of chocolate and coffee. Round and balanced with a prolonged finish revealing pleasant hints of cloves.
Pairing: Roasted or braiied red meats, cold cuts, semi-hard cheese.
